Surface Plates, Blocks and Ring and Plug Gauges
Granite surface plates are checked for flatness using a repeatable grid method, with results reported against the plate's stated grade. Gauge blocks and ring and plug gauges are calibrated under ISO/IEC 17025:2017, and block sets are checked individually rather than accepted as a matched set on reputation alone.
Reports state the reference standards used and the measurement uncertainty for every size or grade checked. Wear and surface damage found at intake are documented separately from the calibration result itself.

What Gets Calibrated
Each gage type is checked against the dimensional or geometric parameter it is used to control, with out-of-tolerance findings reported before any further use.
- 01
Surface plate flatness
Grid-pattern flatness checked and reported against AA, A or B grade.
- 02
Gauge block calibration
Length checked by mechanical or interferometric comparison as the grade requires.
- 03
Ring gauge calibration
Internal diameter verified against traceable setting standards.
- 04
Plug gauge calibration
External diameter and taper checked across the gauging length.
- 05
Condition inspection
Nicks, wear and surface damage are recorded separately at intake.
Calibration Steps
- 01
Intake inspection
Gage condition is checked for damage or wear before measurement begins.
- 02
Comparison measurement
The gage is measured against traceable reference standards.
- 03
Data review
Results are reviewed for conformance before the certificate is issued.
- 04
Certificate issued
Uncertainty and reference standards are stated on the report.

Why Pittsburgh CMM Calibration and Repair
- 01
Full gage range
Surface plates, blocks, and ring and plug gauges are all covered.
- 02
Condition reported
Damage or wear found at intake is documented before calibration proceeds.
- 03
Traceable comparison
Reference standards traceable to NIST are used for every measurement.
