Background

Pittsburgh CMM Calibration and Repair coordinates calibration, repair and programming services for coordinate measuring machines and related gauging used by manufacturers, machine shops and quality departments across Western Pennsylvania and the Upper Ohio Valley. Work is performed by laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017, and certificates are issued under the performing laboratory's accredited scope with stated reference standards and measurement uncertainty. Requests cover bridge, gantry and cantilever CMMs, portable articulated arms, granite surface plates, gauge blocks, and ring and plug gauges, scheduled across the region through on-site visits and depot shipment alike.

How the Work Began

The region's manufacturing base runs CMMs and supporting gauges on production schedules that cannot absorb open-ended downtime. Scheduling is built around that constraint: requests are reviewed for machine type, access window and controller before a visit or shipment is arranged, and a quotation is issued before any item is booked in. Bridge and gantry machines are generally calibrated where they sit, since dismounting a large machine from its foundation introduces its own risk of misalignment, while portable arms and gauging move more readily between a shop floor and a laboratory depot.

Documented procedures govern request review, method selection, and result review and release, with a complaints-and-appeals process available if a result is disputed. Repair work is scoped separately from calibration, with as-found data recorded before any adjustment, so drift and failure history are never lost to an undocumented fix. Where a repair is not economical, that finding is reported on the record rather than carried forward as an open-ended recommendation.

What Guides the Work

These are the operating commitments the work is measured against.

  • 01

    Documented review

Request review and result release follow written procedure, not informal judgment.

  • 02

    Separate scoping

Repair is quoted only after a fault is diagnosed and documented.

  • 03

    Stated traceability

Reference standards traceable to NIST are stated on every certificate.

  • 04

    Honest refusal

Work beyond economical repair is reported plainly on the record.

Where to Look Next

The standards, traceability arrangements and management system behind the work are set out on the quality system page. The competence framework for the people performing it is described on the our team page.
